Kandisa. India through your ears
Kandisa, Indian Ocean’s third album from the year 2000, it’s an invitation and dare. Listening to it it’s a trip like you would never have imagined from the roots of traditional Indian music to the modern voices of today.
Indian Ocean have been around since the early 90s and are now a reference in fusion music all over the world. If you are approaching their music for the first time Kandisa is the perfect album to start with.
It begins with ‘Kya Maloon’ where a chorus of voices will open the way for the rest of the 50 minutes album. It is the second track ‘Ma Rewa’ however, the one that will haunt you the most after a first listening, just as the river it talks about the music will flow through your ears making your mind travel. Amit Kilam’s percussion sets the perfect rhythm and don’t be surprised if you feel the need to dance to the tune.
Another song that will make you start to move, even if you don’t intend to is ‘Hille Re’, the shortest song in the album, and arguably the one closest to modern pop-rock sound.
Last but not least comes ‘Kandisa’ the song that closes the album and also gives it its name, a slow and powerful track that has become a fan-favorite and its always present in the bands live shows. The daunting guitar riffs and the vocal harmonies of the performers are the signature sound of Indian Ocean, a band that through the years has showed their expertise in mixing the best of India’s traditional music with rock and folk influences. I highly recommend you to take a dip into their music, but be aware that you must do it with open mind and ears. You won’t regret it.
